To ensure you have a comfortable and inspiring stay in Marrakech—especially in early March, when the weather is typically warm and sunny with cooler evenings—we recommend packing the following essentials:
Basic Craft Supplies
Bring your favourite tools such as scissors, measuring tape, pins, magnifiers, and any other accessories you enjoy using when crafting. Elizabeth will provide a detailed list of any additional equipment required in advance of the retreat. Please note: each participant will need to bring their own small frame loom suitable for passementerie work.
Comfortable Footwear
Marrakech’s souks and gardens are best explored on foot. Pack well-cushioned, closed-toe shoes suitable for walking on uneven surfaces and stone pathways.
Light Layers & a Warm Wrap
Early spring days are generally sunny and warm, but mornings and evenings can be cooler. Light, breathable clothing layered with a jumper or shawl will help you stay comfortable throughout the day.
Sun Protection
Sunglasses, sun cream, and a wide-brimmed hat are highly recommended, particularly for outdoor excursions to the Souks and Jardin Majorelle.
Modest, Lightweight Clothing
While Marrakech is cosmopolitan, it’s respectful to dress modestly when out and about. Lightweight tops with sleeves, long skirts or trousers, and a scarf to drape over your shoulders will keep you cool and culturally appropriate.
Smart-Casual Attire
Include a few smart-casual outfits for dinners, especially for our evening at a local restaurant.
Travel Adapters
Morocco uses standard European plugs (Type C and E). If you're travelling from outside Europe, be sure to bring a suitable adapter.
Camera or Smartphone
To capture Marrakech’s rich colours, textures, and your creative journey throughout the week.
Small Day Bag
Perfect for excursions—pack a crossbody or small backpack for essentials like your water bottle, phone, purse, and sunhat.
Having these items will help you feel prepared, comfortable, and ready to embrace the magic of Marrakech.

Would you like to learn the art and craft of passementerie?
One of the rarest and most intricate of textile traditions, passementerie is the decorative art of creating ornate ribbons, trimmings, tassels, fringes, and rosettes entirely by hand.
Join us in vibrant Marrakesh for an inspiring passementerie masterclass led by renowned heritage craft specialist Elizabeth Ashdown. Passementerie is listed as an endangered craft in the UK, making this a rare and valuable opportunity to learn directly from one of the country’s last remaining professional passementerie makers.
Set against the rich colours and textures of Morocco, this immersive retreat blends expert instruction with cultural exploration, offering a truly unique opportunity to deepen your creative practice.
In-Depth Workshop Description
Throughout the week, Elizabeth will lead a series of structured, hands-on sessions introducing a variety of traditional and contemporary passementerie techniques. These include:
You will work with high-quality materials and learn specialist techniques to develop your own set of intricate, hand-crafted samples. Over the course of the retreat, you will receive 24 hours of expert tuition, along with inspiration, support, and creative insight to help you refine your craft and develop new ideas.
This retreat also includes curated excursions in Marrakech, offering cultural context and fresh sources of artistic inspiration throughout your creative journey.
Skill Level
This masterclass is open to all. No prior experience in weaving or passementerie is required—just curiosity, creativity, and a willingness to learn.

Your home for the retreat is the contemporary Radisson Blu Hotel, located in the lively Carré Eden district. With spacious modern rooms, a rooftop pool, and a beautiful studio space filled with natural light, it’s an ideal setting for creative focus and comfort.
Once you’ve settled in or explored the nearby gardens and boutiques, we’ll gather in the hotel bar for a casual welcome drink. This will be followed by a group dinner, where you can connect with fellow guests and meet your tutor, Elizabeth Ashdown, in an informal setting.
Highlights:
Our exploration begins with a guided walking tour of Marrakech’s iconic souks—an immersive experience designed to awaken your senses and fuel your creative vision. Accompanied by a knowledgeable local guide, you’ll navigate vibrant alleyways brimming with richly woven textiles, shimmering metallic threads, silk cords, tassels, trims, and traditional passementerie elements that have adorned Moroccan interiors and garments for centuries.
Around midday, we’ll stop at a popular local eatery where you’ll have the opportunity to enjoy a light lunch. While food is at your own expense, we recommend sampling a traditional tagine, a fresh salad, or the sweet and savoury flavours of pastilla.
Afterwards, enjoy some leisurely time to browse, photograph, or gather materials before returning to the hotel to unwind. In the evening, we’ll come together once more for dinner in the hotel’s restaurant.
Highlights:
Following breakfast, we gather in the hotel’s bright and airy studio for our first full day of creative work with Elizabeth Ashdown. Today, Elizabeth will introduce you to the art of Passementerie weaving using a frame loom—a fascinating and tactile process that blends colour, texture, and technique.
You’ll begin by setting up your loom and exploring the materials provided, which include a curated selection of fibres, yarns, and decorative threads. Elizabeth will guide you through the core techniques of Passementerie weaving, offering expert demonstrations and individual support throughout the day.
Both morning and afternoon sessions allow generous time for hands-on weaving and creative exploration. A light lunch will be served in the hotel to keep you refreshed and inspired.
After class, take time to relax—whether it’s by the pool, in the spa, or with a stroll nearby—before joining the group once more for dinner in the hotel restaurant.
Highlights:
After a relaxed breakfast, we return to our light-filled studio space for the next stage in our Passementerie journey. Today, Elizabeth Ashdown will introduce the art of crafting decorative rosettes—ornamental textile elements traditionally used in fashion, interiors, and ceremonial wear.
Elizabeth will demonstrate key techniques for building layered, dimensional rosettes using gathered fabrics, trims, and cords. You’ll begin constructing your own rosette, experimenting with texture, colour, and form. This is a delicate and rewarding craft that will continue into the morning session on Day 6, allowing time to refine your design and add finishing details.
The day is structured with morning and afternoon sessions, allowing for deep focus and one-on-one guidance. A light lunch will be served onsite to keep the creative energy flowing.
After class, enjoy some time to unwind or explore independently before we head out together in the evening for dinner at one of Marrakech’s charming local restaurants. This shared meal offers a wonderful opportunity to experience Moroccan hospitality and culture in an authentic setting.
Highlights:
Today we step into the world of fashion, design, and botanical beauty with a visit to two of Marrakech’s most iconic cultural sites. Our morning begins at the Musée Yves Saint Laurent Marrakech, where the legendary designer’s haute couture pieces and artistic influences are beautifully displayed. The museum offers a wealth of inspiration for lovers of textiles, embellishment, and bold visual aesthetics.
Just a short stroll away, we’ll continue into the enchanting Jardin Majorelle. Designed by French painter Jacques Majorelle and later restored by Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Bergé, the gardens are celebrated for their striking cobalt blue structures, rare plant species, and tranquil pathways—perfect for sketching, photography, or quiet reflection.
Guests are welcome to enjoy lunch at one of the stylish cafés within the garden complex, offering fresh, seasonal dishes in a leafy, serene setting. The afternoon is left open for personal exploration, whether that means wandering the area, relaxing with a sketchbook, or heading back to the hotel at your own pace.
Dinner this evening will be served in the hotel’s restaurant, where we’ll regroup and unwind after a stimulating day.
Highlights:
After breakfast, we return to the studio for a dynamic day of hands-on creation. The morning session is dedicated to completing your Passementerie rosettes, adding the final flourishes and embellishments that bring each unique design to life. Elizabeth will offer personalised guidance to help you refine your work and finish with confidence.
Following a light lunch, we begin the next exciting stage of the retreat: tassel making. Elizabeth will introduce this vibrant decorative art form, demonstrating the essential techniques for wrapping, binding, and shaping elegant, dimensional tassels. You’ll begin constructing your own designs, experimenting with materials and scale.
This afternoon marks the beginning of our tassel-making project, which will continue throughout tomorrow’s full-day session. Elizabeth will guide you through each stage of the process, providing expert demonstrations and individual support as your tassels take shape.
After class, there’s time to relax, enjoy the hotel’s amenities, or take a stroll before we gather for dinner.
Highlights:
Today is dedicated to the joyful and expressive craft of tassel making. After breakfast, we return to the studio for a full day of hands-on creativity with Elizabeth Ashdown. Building on the techniques introduced yesterday, you’ll continue developing your tassels—exploring variations in form, texture, and embellishment.
Elizabeth will guide you through each step, from binding and wrapping to assembling multi-part designs, offering tailored advice and support as you bring your tassels to life.
A light lunch will be served at the hotel to keep you energised, followed by an afternoon session of focused making. As the day draws to a close, we’ll come together for a relaxed and informal show-and-tell, where you’ll have the chance to share your work, reflect on the week’s creative journey, and celebrate each other’s accomplishments.
Dinner will be served in the hotel restaurant, marking our final evening together.
Highlights:
After a vibrant and inspiring week of creativity, culture, and connection, it’s time to bid farewell. Take the morning to enjoy a relaxed breakfast with your fellow guests, reflect on the experiences shared, and perhaps exchange contacts and photos before heading off.
