Throughout the retreat, you’ll be guided by the incredibly talented Hannah Mansfield, whose modern approach to traditional embroidery techniques has earned her international recognition. Our bright, air-conditioned studio opens directly onto the hotel gardens, creating a calm and creative atmosphere perfect for stitching. Magnifying lamps will also be provided for your comfort.

Often described as the “Hawaii of Europe,” Madeira is famous for its year-round subtropical climate, dramatic scenery, and vibrant gardens. February is a particularly lovely time to visit, with daytime temperatures averaging around 22°C (72°F) and mild evenings of around 16°C (60°F). Despite its island setting in the Atlantic Ocean, Madeira is very easy to reach, with direct flights available from many major European cities.

Funchal, the island’s colourful capital, is full of character and charm. Built across the hillsides overlooking the Atlantic, the city blends historic streets, bustling markets, tropical gardens, and relaxed café culture with breathtaking sea views. Whether you spend your free time wandering through the old town, enjoying the island’s famous scenery, or simply stitching in the sunshine, Madeira provides the perfect backdrop for a truly memorable embroidery retreat.
