To ensure a comfortable and enjoyable stay in Lucca, especially during the beautiful Tuscan spring when the weather is generally warm with occasional rain, we recommend packing the following essentials:
Lacemaking Supplies
Bring your preferred lacemaking tools such as lace pillow, scissors, magnifiers, bobbins and threads, and any equipment you like to work with.
Comfortable Footwear
Lucca’s charm is best discovered on foot, especially through its historic walled centre. Pack well-cushioned, closed-toe shoes suitable for cobbled streets and gentle hill walks.
Light Layers & Waterproof Jacket
June in Tuscany can offer both sunny and breezy days. Pack a few light layers and a waterproof jacket to stay comfortable in shifting weather conditions.
Sun Protection
Sunglasses, a sunhat, and sun cream are highly recommended, especially for excursions and time spent outdoors in Lucca’s gardens and piazzas.
Smart-Casual Attire
A few smart-casual outfits are ideal for group dinners and evening outings, including one special dinner at a local trattoria.
Travel Adapters
Italy typically uses European standard plugs (Type C and F), but some rooms at Villa La Principessa still use the traditional Italian Type L sockets. We recommend bringing a universal adapter with Type L compatibility.
If you are unable to find the correct adapter, charging facilities will be available in the workshop space for your convenience.
Camera or Smartphone
Capture the artistic inspiration of the Tuscan landscape, the details of historic villas, and your creative journey throughout the week.
Small Day Bag
Perfect for excursions—carry your essentials like a water bottle, wallet, phone, and a light scarf or compact umbrella.
Having these items on hand will ensure you’re prepared, comfortable, and able to fully enjoy your creative retreat in Lucca.

Lacemaking starts with just a few simple stitches, and the satisfaction comes almost immediately as patterns begin to form. It’s calming, creative, and surprisingly addictive. Take the first step, join me in Lucca, Italy to learn the basics, and discover just how much you can create with a few bobbins and some thread.
Rosaline Perle lace originates from Belgium and is part of the Duchesse family of flower laces. Historically regarded as a simpler relative within this group, it was worked with speed and efficiency, producing continuous swags and trails for collars and edgings. The structure is motif-based, with the Rose as the dominant element, linked by fine plaits and decorated with picots, and completed with characteristic fluted outer edges.
Traditionally worked with a limited setup of just 14 bobbins and requiring limited thread starts and finishes, Rosaline Perle lends itself well to adaptation. Individual motifs can be reinterpreted, re-scaled, or reassembled, making the technique particularly suitable for contemporary design approaches while remaining firmly rooted in traditional practice.
Lacemaking is a wonderfully absorbing craft that combines creativity, rhythm, and tradition in a way few other skills do. Whether a beginner or experienced, with just a handful of tools and some thread, you can create something intricate and beautiful, one pair of bobbins at a time. It offers a rare sense of calm and focus, yet is endlessly challenging and rewarding as your skills grow.
Whether you’re drawn to the history, the problem solving, or the quiet pleasure of making something with your hands, lacemaking has a way of drawing people in — and once it does, it often becomes a lifelong passion.
Judith Cordell
My journey into lacemaking began in 1994, quite by chance, when I discovered bobbin lacemaking in an Adult Education brochure. What started as a way to fill my time quickly grew into a lifelong passion. As a tutor I am best known for teaching Rosaline Perle — a lesser-known Belgian lace that continues to inspire me. Even today, I’m still discovering new techniques from antique pieces and enjoy introducing coloured silks to keep my designs fresh and contemporary.
Your creative journey begins as you arrive in the heart of Tuscany, ready to immerse yourself in a week of stitching, inspiration, and discovery. Nestled in the hills just outside the historic centre, Hotel Villa La Principessa is our retreat base — a grand Tuscan villa surrounded by peaceful gardens, just a short distance (3km) from the walled city of Lucca.
Check-in is available from 15:00, but if you arrive earlier, you’re welcome to unwind in the villa’s elegant lounges or explore the gardens and surrounding countryside. For those eager to stretch their legs, a short taxi ride will bring you into Lucca to explore its cobbled streets, artisan shops, and lively piazzas.
In the early evening, we’ll gather for the first time as a group. Join us for a welcome drink at 18:30 at the hotel bar, followed by a group dinner at 19:30. Judith Cordell will introduce herself and the week ahead — a relaxed opportunity to meet your fellow guests, share stories, and begin this creative journey together.

Highlights
Villa Reale di Marlia is one of Tuscany’s most spectacular historic villas, located just a few kilometres from Lucca. Originally a noble residence, it became the royal home of Elisa Bonaparte Baciocchi, who transformed the estate in the early 19th century into a grand royal retreat. Today, the estate covers 16 hectares of beautifully restored gardens and historic buildings, blending Renaissance, Baroque, Neoclassical, and Romantic landscape styles.
Visitors can explore elegant formal gardens, romantic lakeside landscapes, camellia-lined walks, the historic Lemon Garden, and the remarkable Green Theatre—considered the oldest surviving hedge theatre in Europe. The villa and its grounds offer a fascinating journey through art, architecture, and garden design, making it one of the finest historic estates in the Lucca region.
In the afternoon, we will visit Lucca which is one of Tuscany’s most charming and beautifully preserved historic cities. Renowned for its impressive Renaissance walls, which completely encircle the old town, Lucca offers a unique blend of rich history, elegant architecture, and relaxed Italian atmosphere. The city’s narrow cobbled streets are lined with medieval churches, grand piazzas, artisan shops, cafés, and beautifully preserved palaces, creating a setting that feels untouched by time.
Often referred to as the “City of a Hundred Churches,” Lucca is home to remarkable landmarks including the Piazza dell’Anfiteatro, built on the site of an ancient Roman amphitheatre, the striking Guinigi Tower with its rooftop garden of oak trees, and the magnificent Lucca Cathedral. Visitors can stroll or cycle along the tree-lined city walls, enjoying panoramic views over the historic centre and surrounding Tuscan countryside.
We will visit haberdashery shops and enjoy lunch (cost is on your own) at the Piazza dell’Anfiteatro.
We travel back to the hotel by individual taxi's around 4.00pm before meeting for group dinner in the hotel restaurant at 19.30.
Highlights
This morning, we return to the studio for a stitching session that builds on your project’s progress so far. Judith will be on hand to offer feedback, encouragement, and help with any questions that have arisen.
Highlights
After a relaxing morning of lacemaking with Judith Cordell, we will enjoy lunch before boarding our private coach for an afternoon excursion to the historic city of Pisa. Here, we will have the opportunity to admire the world-famous Leaning Tower of Pisa and explore the city’s charming streets. As part of our visit, we will browse a selection of local haberdasheries and artisan shops, offering a wonderful opportunity to discover Italian craftsmanship and perhaps find a few special treasures to take home. We will round off the day with an early dinner at a traditional Italian restaurant before returning to the hotel for a relaxing evening.
We will travel back to the hotel around 20:00 to enjoy drinks in the hotel bar.
Highlights
Today marks our final day in the studio together. There’s time to complete your piece, ask final questions, and reflect on the week’s progress. Judith will be available throughout to help with finishing details or provide advice on next steps for your lacemaking journey.
At 16:30, we gather as a group for a relaxed and informal show and tell — a celebratory moment to share what you’ve created and to be inspired by each other’s work.
We end the day with a special farewell dinner, full of warm conversation and creative pride. We will meet for farewell drinks at the bar from 18:30.
