A Tassel-Making Retreat in Milan

We are very excited to be travelling to Milan with the wonderful passementerie artist Elizabeth Ashdown for a special week of tassel making, Italian design and beautiful craftsmanship.

Elizabeth will teach for four full days, with 24 hours of tuition during the retreat. She will introduce you to the traditional techniques used to create decorative tassels and guide you through a selection of carefully designed projects.

During the week, you will work with colour, texture and construction techniques to create your own beautiful tassels. Whether this is your first time trying tassel making or you already have some experience, Elizabeth will support you throughout the retreat and help you develop your skills and confidence.

Elizabeth is a warm and enthusiastic teacher who enjoys sharing her specialist knowledge. There will be demonstrations, individual guidance and plenty of time to work on each project at a comfortable pace.

Our home for the week will be the Starhotels Anderson in central Milan. The hotel is a convenient base for exploring the city and enjoying its long history of art, fashion, design and craftsmanship.

We will spend time discovering Milan, including a visit to the magnificent Duomo. There will also be opportunities to explore the elegant streets, galleries and hidden corners of the city.

We are planning some additional textile and design visits for the retreat, which will be confirmed nearer the time. These will give us the opportunity to discover more of Milan’s creative heritage and meet people working in the worlds of textiles, decoration and design.

One of the highlights of the week will be a full-day excursion by high-speed train to Turin.

In Turin, we will visit Antica Fabbrica Passamaneria, a historic Italian passementerie manufacturer. Here, we will learn more about the traditional production of tassels, braids, fringes and decorative trimmings used for interiors, fashion, theatres and historic buildings.

This will be a very special opportunity to see traditional craftsmanship at its source and discover techniques that continue to inspire makers and designers today.

There will also be time to enjoy Turin’s elegant architecture and atmosphere before returning to Milan by train.

With most meals included, carefully planned visits and a small group of guests, this retreat will be a lovely week of learning, creativity, Italian culture and time spent with friends old and new.
