This retreat is the perfect opportunity to spend time enjoying the company of like-minded people in lovely surroundings, while creating beautiful embroidery. I aim to create a fun and relaxed environment for all my students, where they can try new techniques and improve on their existing skills.
This year’s designs are inspired by historical needlework and my love of vintage-inspired nostalgia. All my designs are grounded in traditional hand embroidery techniques, but I enjoy using these techniques in a fun and contemporary way. I also love mixing techniques together to create interesting designs.

The Pansy, or Heartsease, has long been associated with love and romance. Its heart-shaped petals were once believed to cure a broken heart. Inspired by early 17th-century embroidery styles, this design features silk-shaded pansy flowers surrounded by burden-stitched leaves and swirling stems. All elements are worked in beautiful silk threads, framed by an oval border of gilt wire and spangles to give it a rich, ornate appearance. This design is ideal for trying silk floss threads.

This embroidery draws inspiration from the 4-panelled Crewelwork screen held in the Royal School of Needlework collection. It features a beautifully stylised flower with a delicate butterfly hovering nearby. The design is worked on linen twill fabric using Appletons crewel wools, employing a variety of stitches including long and short stitch, trellis stitch, raised stem stitch, stem stitch, closed fly, French knots, and bullion knots. This is a lovely project for crewelwork enthusiasts.

Inspired by the 17th century, this delicate needlelace stitches with bordered turns, coupled with couched passing threads and closed fly stitches. A border of Elizabethan double looped edging completes the stitching, before the finished embroidery is transformed into a charming brooch or hanging ornament. The design is worked in beautiful silk and gold threads on silk duchess satin.

Sugar and spice and all things nice – that’s what this embroidery is made of! This charming design is made up of tent-stitched humbugs, silk-wrapped bonbons, beaded candies and a corded candy cane. Create your very own Gingerbread House Christmas embroidery with this design. Beautiful Au ver a Soie threads, along with felt appliqué, beads, and tiny sequins, bring this festive design to life. It’s the perfect way to get into the Christmas spirit!

These vintage-inspired ornaments are made using traditional goldwork techniques. Coloured metal threads and wires together with metallic leather are worked to create the beautiful baubles. Evergreen branches are stitched in DMC cotton threads, and tiny sequins are added to the background fabric to make it extra festive. This is a lovely project to do, and it’s never too early to start your Christmas stitching!
Kate Barlow
Kate Barlow is a master embroiderer known for her artistry, warmth, and world-class teaching. A graduate of the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, she began her creative career in costume design before transitioning into the world of fine embroidery.
Kate trained at the prestigious Royal School of Needlework, graduating with distinction and multiple awards, including the Elizabeth Elvin Goldwork Award and Merchant Taylors Company Outstanding Achievement Award. Her celebrated silk shaded budgie “Smuggler” was even exhibited at the Royal Academy of Arts Summer Exhibition.
Today, Kate teaches widely across the UK, Europe, and North America and has collaborated with respected organisations including the Crewelwork Company, Needlework Tours, and the Embroiderers’ Guild of America. She also had the great honour of contributing to several historic pieces for the Coronation of King Charles III and Queen Camilla, including the Queen’s Robe of Estate and the Anointing Screen.
With her deep knowledge, approachable teaching style, and boundless enthusiasm, Kate makes every class both educational and inspiring—perfect for stitchers of all levels.
We’re excited to welcome you to your needlework holiday with Creative Experiences! Your journey begins the moment you land at Barcelona International Airport (BCN), where a complimentary shuttle service will be waiting to transfer you comfortably to the Gran Palas Hotel.
Check-in at the hotel begins from 3:00pm. If you arrive earlier, you’re welcome to unwind at the hotel’s restaurant or bar while your room is being prepared. Take this time to relax, refresh, and start soaking in the beautiful surroundings of Spain’s coastline.
Once you've settled into your room, join us at 6:30pm in the main bar for welcome drinks. This is a lovely opportunity to meet your fellow guests, say hello to your hosts, and ease into the relaxed, creative atmosphere of the week ahead.
After drinks and introductions, we’ll head to dinner together. Enjoy a delicious buffet-style meal featuring local Spanish cuisine, accompanied by wine, beer, water, and soft drinks—all included. It’s the perfect way to round off your first day and start the week on a warm and sociable note.

Wake up to the gentle sounds of the Spanish coast and join us for a delicious breakfast served from 08:00 to 09:30. It's the perfect way to ease into the first full day of your creative holiday.
At 10:00, we’ll gather for our morning session with Kate Barlow, where she will introduce her carefully curated projects and begin guiding you through the first steps. With her signature warmth and expertise, you’ll start bringing your needlework journey to life.
After a fulfilling morning of stitching and creativity, we’ll break at 13:00 for a buffet lunch in the hotel restaurant. Enjoy a relaxed meal with your fellow guests while recharging for the afternoon ahead.
The afternoon session begins at 14:30 and runs until 17:30, offering more time with Kate as you continue working on your project. Expect insightful tips, individual guidance, and plenty of creative inspiration.
From 17:30 to 20:00, the evening is yours to enjoy. Stroll through the hotel grounds, take a refreshing swim, visit the beach, or simply unwind in your room. It’s your time to relax and soak in the setting.
To close the day, we invite you to a special three-course Gala Dinner at 20:00, served outdoors on the hotel grounds (weather permitting). With fine food, drinks, and great company, it’s the perfect way to celebrate the beginning of a memorable week.
Day 2 Highlights

At 10:00, we’ll gather for our morning needlework session with Kate, continuing to develop your project with expert guidance and plenty of encouragement. This is a great opportunity to ask questions, explore techniques, and enjoy creative flow in a supportive environment.
Break for lunch at 13:00, where a buffet-style meal awaits in the hotel’s restaurant. Refuel, relax, and recharge before heading into the afternoon.
Our afternoon session runs from 14:30 to 17:30, offering more focused time with Kate as you deepen your work and gain new insights into your stitching practice.
From 17:30 to 20:00, enjoy your free time—perhaps take a stroll along the beach, visit the spa, or relax by the pool with a drink in hand.
Dinner is served in the hotel’s main buffet restaurant, where a section has been reserved especially for our group. You’re welcome to dine at your convenience during the restaurant’s opening hours. Enjoy a wide selection of delicious Spanish and international dishes in a relaxed and informal setting.
Day 3 Highlights
A Day of Culture and Colour in Barcelona
Today we step away from the stitching table to explore one of Europe’s most iconic and artistic cities—Barcelona. Start your day early with breakfast from 07:45 to 08:30, fuelling up for an exciting day ahead.
At 08:30, our executive coach will collect us from the hotel for a scenic journey into the heart of Catalonia. Our first stop is the world-famous Parc Güell, an imaginative and vibrant garden city filled with colourful mosaics, whimsical architecture, and panoramic views. Designed by Antoni Gaudí, this UNESCO-listed site is a celebration of creativity and nature—perfect inspiration for needlework minds.
After time to explore the park, we’ll enjoy lunch on-site in the relaxing surroundings of Parc Güell before continuing our adventure. In the afternoon, we’ll hop aboard the Barcelona hop-on hop-off sightseeing bus, which takes us through the city's highlights before dropping us off at Plaça de Catalunya.
From there, we’ll enjoy a guided stroll into the Gothic Quarter, wandering down La Rambla, Barcelona’s most famous street, and ending at the vibrant Mercat de la Boqueria, a lively and colourful market that captures the spirit of the city. There will be time to take photos, explore the stalls, and soak in the atmosphere before we regroup.
Our coach will depart Barcelona at 18:00, returning us comfortably to the Gran Palas Hotel in time for a well-earned dinner.
Dinner will be served from 20:00 to 21:00 in the main buffet restaurant, where our group will have a dedicated section. After a full day of exploring, enjoy a relaxed and delicious meal at your own pace.
Day 4 Highlights

Enjoy a peaceful start to your day with a buffet breakfast available from 08:00 to 09:30. Take this time to prepare for another enriching day of creativity and connection.
At 10:00, we’ll begin our morning needlework session with Kate Barlow. With your project well underway, this session offers a chance to go deeper—refining techniques, exploring detail, and gaining further insight under Kate’s expert guidance.
We’ll break at 13:00 for a buffet lunch in the hotel restaurant, a great opportunity to enjoy fresh, local dishes and catch up with fellow guests.
The afternoon session runs from 14:30 to 17:30, continuing the relaxed rhythm of hands-on creativity and support from Kate. Whether you’re building on your progress or exploring something new, this is a space to feel confident and inspired.
Free time from 17:30 to 20:00 allows you to enjoy the beautiful surroundings. Whether you prefer lounging by the pool, unwinding at the spa, or simply taking in the sea air with a walk, this is your time to relax and recharge.
Dinner is served between 20:00 and 21:00 in the hotel’s main buffet restaurant. A section will be reserved for our group, and you're welcome to dine at your leisure within the opening hours. Enjoy a variety of Spanish and international dishes in a relaxed, sociable setting.
Day 5 Highlights
Creativity in the Morning, Culture in the Afternoon
Start your day with a relaxed buffet breakfast from 08:00 to 09:30, setting a calm and focused tone for another day of stitching and exploration.
At 10:00, we’ll come together for our morning needlework session with Kate Barlow. As your projects progress, this is a great time to refine details, ask questions, and receive personal guidance in a supportive and creative environment.
At 13:00, we’ll break for a delicious buffet lunch in the hotel restaurant before heading out for the afternoon.
At 14:00, we depart for a short drive (15 minutes) to the charming town of Reus, known as the birthplace of architect Antoni Gaudí. Our cultural visit includes a guided tour of the stunning Casa Navàs, a remarkable example of Modernist architecture. We’ll also stroll through Reus’s indoor food market, rich with colour and local flavour, and pop into one or two haberdashery shops—perfect for a bit of inspiration or souvenir shopping.
We return to the hotel by 17:00, giving you time to unwind before dinner. Whether you choose to relax by the pool, visit the spa, or simply enjoy some quiet time, the evening is yours.
Dinner will be available between 20:00 and 21:00 in the main buffet restaurant. A section will be reserved for our group, and you're free to dine at your own pace within the opening hours.
Day 6 Highlights
A Creative Finale and a Celebration to Remember
Enjoy a peaceful start to your final full day with breakfast served from 08:00 to 09:30. Take a moment to reflect on the week’s inspiration and look forward to a day of creative completion and celebration.
At 10:00, we begin our morning needlework session with Kate, giving you the opportunity to complete your projects and enjoy your last full day of stitching. Kate will continue to offer guidance and support as you bring your creative vision to life.
After a buffet lunch at 13:00, we return for the final afternoon session from 14:30 to 17:30, which includes a special Show & Tell. This is a relaxed and heartwarming moment where everyone is invited to share their work, celebrate each other’s progress, and reflect on the journey we’ve shared throughout the week.
You’ll have a little time after class to relax and freshen up before we gather for a celebratory drink in the bar at 19:00. It’s a chance to toast to new friendships, creative accomplishments, and a week filled with inspiration.
At 20:00, we’ll come together for a special final group dinner in the main buffet restaurant. A designated area will be reserved for our group so we can enjoy the evening together in great company, with plenty of delicious food and shared memories.
Day 7 Highlights
Farewell and Safe Travels
As your creative holiday comes to a close, we hope you leave feeling inspired, relaxed, and filled with beautiful memories.
This morning, enjoy a final buffet breakfast at your leisure, and take some time to reflect on the wonderful week we've shared. Whether you choose a quiet moment by the sea or one last coffee with new friends, this is your time to soak in the last of the experience.
Hotel check-out is by 12:00, and airport transfers will be arranged according to your individual flight schedules. The Creative Experiences team will be on hand to assist with luggage and ensure your journey back to Barcelona International Airport (BCN) is smooth and stress-free.

Changes
Should you wish to change your booking, Creative Experiences will endeavour to accommodate any changes subject to any differences in price and availability, but cannot guarantee that changes can be made. Creative Experiences will make an administration charge of £50 for any change in booking. Bookings cannot be changed within 2 weeks of the start of your holiday.
Responsibility
Creative Experiences will not be liable for any loss or damages occurred to any client as a result of:
Any event or circumstance which could have been avoided if the client had taken reasonable care.
Any circumstance or event which Creative Experiences or its suppliers could not have foreseen or prevented even with all due care and attention.
Circumstances out of the reasonable control of Creative Experiences such as strikes, wars, civil or political unrest, quarantine restrictions, terrorism, government actions, natural or nuclear disaster adverse weather conditions including injury or illness to staff thus reducing level of service.
Injury, illness or death due to any activity at any time during your holiday, except where such injury or death is caused by the negligence or fraud of Creative Experiences.
Loss of, theft of or damage to any of your belongings at any time of your holiday, whether within the chalet, in the neighbourhood or otherwise.
Injury, illness or death associated with the consumption of any food or drink we may supply except where such illness, injury or death is caused by the wilful negligence or fraud of Creative Experiences or its directors, officers or employees.
Excursion days
We do not accept responsibility if an artisan or person does not show up or cancels private booked excursion such as walking tours, artisan lessons, cooking lessons, wine tastings etc. Should this situation arise, Creative Experiences will try their very best to book another excursion and find an alternative at no cost to the client.
Our suppliers
Creative Experiences is working with third party suppliers such as hotels, villas, transfer companies and others. We are more than happy to discuss any of your requirements such as food allergies with hotels, specific room allocations, pick and drop off times with transfers companies, however we cannot guarantee that your request can be fulfilled. In case of special client requirements not being accepted by the third party, we will be contacting you at our earliest convenience to let you know.
Complaints and Problems
In the unlikely event that you have any reason to complain or experience any problems with your holiday, you must immediately inform the Creative Experiences representative and the supplier of the service(s) in question. Any verbal notification must be put in writing and given to our representative and the supplier as soon as possible. Until we know about a problem or complaint, we cannot begin to solve it. Most problems can be dealt with quickly. If you remain dissatisfied however, you must write to us within 28 days of your return to your home country giving your booking reference and full details of your complaint. We regret we do not accept any liability in relation to any complaint or claim which is not notified entirely in accordance with this clause.
Website Accuracy
Please note that the information and prices shown on this website may have changed by the time you come to book your holiday. Whilst every effort is made to ensure the accuracy of the website and prices, regrettably errors occasionally do occur. You must therefore ensure you check all details of your chosen holiday (including the price) with us at the time of booking. The website is the sole responsibility of Creative Experiences. Emergency
Creative Experience will provide you with assistance in case of emergency during your holiday with us. We can help you bringing you to health services, working with local authorities and international consulate in case you lost your passport or important papers.
If you have an emergency because of your own negligence, Creative Experiences may ask you for a fee occurred during the process such as extra transfers, missed bookings with third parties and more.
Conduct
When you enjoy your holiday with Creative Experiences, you are responsible for any damage or loss caused by you. In case of damage in a hotel or villa (third party supplier), the client has to pay the damage charges directly to the supplier.
We do reserve the rights to cancel your holiday, in case you put others in danger through your actions, verbal abuse and by causing significant distress to other holiday makers who are joining that group. We do not tolerate violence or abuse in any form to our clients or staff members.
Deposits
For any holiday, we require a non-refundable deposit of 20% of holiday cost. If your deposit payment is not received within 7 days, the holiday may be offered to other interested parties.

Emergency
Creative Experience will provide you with assistance in case of emergency during your holiday with us. We can help you bringing you to health services, working with local authorities and international consulate in case you lost your passport or important papers.
If you have an emergency because of your own negligence, Creative Experiences may ask you for a fee occurred during the process such as extra transfers, missed bookings with third parties and more.
Conduct
When you enjoy your holiday with Creative Experiences, you are responsible for any damage or loss caused by you. In case of damage in a hotel or villa (third party supplier), the client has to pay the damage charges directly to the supplier.
We do reserve the rights to cancel your holiday, in case you put others in danger through your actions, verbal abuse and by causing significant distress to other holiday makers who are joining that group. We do not tolerate violence or abuse in any form to our clients or staff members.
