An Embroidery Retreat in Vancouver

We are very excited to be bringing the wonderful embroidery tutor Lorna Bateman to North America for this special retreat in Vancouver.

During this seven-night retreat, Lorna will teach for four days and introduce you to three-dimensional and ribbon embroidery. You will work with ribbons, threads and dimensional stitches to create beautiful flowers and foliage, with plenty of time to practise the techniques and develop your project.

Lorna is a warm and supportive teacher who enjoys helping every guest work at a comfortable pace. Whether you are new to these techniques or already have experience, Lorna will be available throughout the week to demonstrate, answer questions and offer individual guidance.

Our home for the retreat will be the historic Sylvia Hotel, which is beautifully located beside English Bay and close to Stanley Park.

We will also enjoy two excursion days during our time in Vancouver.

On our first excursion, we will visit the Museum of Anthropology at the University of British Columbia. We will then spend time on Granville Island, where we can explore the market, creative studios and specialist textile and haberdashery shops. A boat journey across False Creek will give us a lovely view of Vancouver from the water.

Our second excursion will take us to Canada Place, Vancouver’s waterfront and the historic area of Gastown, where we will see the famous steam clock. From Waterfront Station, we will travel by SeaBus to North Vancouver, with beautiful views of the harbour and city skyline, before visiting Lonsdale Quay.

This retreat will be a lovely week of embroidery, textile inspiration, sightseeing and time spent with friends old and new.

About The Host

Lorna Bateman

Lorna Bateman

Lorna Bateman is a highly respected embroidery teacher and designer with over 30 years of experience in the art of 3-dimensional and textured hand embroidery. Since 1989, she has worked full-time in the field, and for the past two decades, she has developed her own beautiful and inspiring range of embroidery kits.

Lorna’s work is characterised by her creative use of threads and silk ribbons to create rich, raised textures. She delights in exploring a variety of techniques, including ribbon embroidery, stumpwork, crazy patchwork, painting on fabric, canvaswork, and appliqué. Deeply inspired by nature, her designs often reflect her love of flowers, landscapes, and colour.

Originally from South Africa, Lorna has called the UK home for the past 19 years. Her passion for embroidery has led her to teach across the UK and internationally in South Africa, Russia, France, and the USA.

Her work has been widely published, with features in Stitch (UK), Australian Inspirations, and many more. She has also made appearances on Justhands-on-TV and the Hochanda craft channel. Her acclaimed book, Embroidered Country Gardens, was published in July 2019 and translated into French in 2020.

Above all, Lorna is passionate about teaching. She loves encouraging stitchers of all levels—especially beginners—to explore different embroidery styles. Her aim is to help people gain confidence using kits as a foundation to eventually create and experiment with their own designs.
