A Lacemaking Retreat in Somerset

We are very pleased to welcome the wonderful lacemaking tutor Carole Smith for a special retreat at Hurds Hill, a beautiful 19th-century country house in the Somerset countryside.

During the week, Carole will teach for five days, with 30 hours of lacemaking tuition in total. Whether you are a confident beginner or an experienced lacemaker, Carole will support you throughout the retreat and help you develop your skills.

There will be plenty of time to work on your lace, ask questions and enjoy learning in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.

Hurds Hill will be our home for the week. The house is full of character and surrounded by peaceful countryside, making it a lovely place to stitch, rest and spend time with the group.

We will also enjoy two excursions during the retreat.

One day, we will travel by private coach to Honiton, a town famous for its long lacemaking history. We will visit the Allhallows Museum of Lace and Local Antiquities, where we will enjoy a private tour and learn more about Honiton lace. There will also be time to visit the seaside during the day.

After class on another day, we will visit the nearby village of Langport and have time to explore.

Creative Experiences will take care of the arrangements throughout the week, including transport, meals and magnifying lamps, so you can relax and enjoy your time with Carole and the other guests.

We hope you will join us for a lovely week of lacemaking, friendship and time in the Somerset countryside.

About Carole Smith

Carole began lacemaking at the age of ten at a class in Hertfordshire. A few years later, following a family move to Aberdeen, her lacemaking developed with annual courses from Kitty Mason and tutors visiting the area to speak at the local Lace Day such as Pamela Nottingham and Veronica Sorensen. Since 2001, Carole has joined the group traveling to Brugge to be taught by Anne-Marie Verbeke-Billet and Magda Malisse.

The opportunity to learn from these experts in their field has been invaluable not only in the making of Flemish laces but in designing them too.Now based in Perth, Carole teaches at courses around Scotland and is a co-director and tutor at the annual Edinburgh Lace Course.

This will be the fifth year Carole has joined Mark and Nadine to offer a lacemaking course having previously visited the French Alps, Italy, Spain and Lisbon in 2026 .Carole enjoys teaching a wide variety of bobbin laces ranging from Torchon and British laces such as Bucks Point to the Flemish laces – Flanders, Binche, Mechlin, Brugge Flower Lace and Duchesse.Carole is happy to help and support both beginners and more experienced lacemakers to develop their skills.
