Cathy Emmott | Creative Retreat at The Bank House Hotel
Please note: This is the workshop description from 2025. The 2026 retreat will follow a similar structure, with the addition of a brand-new seaside-inspired tote bag project, introduced alongside this much-loved fabric bowl workshop.
Pretty Street Scene Fabric Bowl (18cm x 17cm diameter)
Would you like to learn how to create a beautiful, handmade fabric bowl adorned with charming little houses? This delightful project is as useful as it is decorative—ideal as a desk tidy, dressing table bowl, or even to pop a small plant in. Once you've made one, you'll be inspired to make many more!
Across three days of guided sewing, Cathy Emmott will take you through the fundamentals of free-motion machine embroidery (FME) and raw-edge applique. You'll learn how to design and stitch your own unique Pretty Street Sceneusing a carefully selected mix of new and vintage fabrics.
Day 1
Set up your sewing machine for free-motion embroidery and begin with a pre-prepared design to practice your technique. Cathy will demonstrate her approach to FME and raw-edge applique in a clear, beginner-friendly way, and help you start designing your own street scene.
Day 2
Choose fabrics from Cathy’s personal stash, plan your design, and begin stitching your unique scene with guidance and feedback throughout.
Day 3
Continue sewing and turn your completed street scene into a beautiful and functional fabric bowl to take home.
Participants are required to bring their own sewing machine suitable for free-motion embroidery, along with a compatible darning foot. It is essential that you are confident using your machine in this setting and that it is in full working order.
If you’re unable to bring a machine, please contact Nadine in advance.
A minimum requirements list will be provided before the retreat, outlining the basic sewing tools you’ll need (e.g. scissors, pins, etc.).
Available to purchase from Cathy directly on arrival. The kit includes:
• All fabric and thread requirements
• A full-colour printed instruction booklet
• Use of Cathy’s fabric stash during class
• Additional materials available to purchase for home use
About Cathy Emmott – Dear Emma Designs
Cathy Emmott is the creative force behind Dear Emma Designs, a charming textile studio nestled in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales. From her light-filled garden workshop, Cathy brings her whimsical ideas to life using free-motion machine embroidery and raw-edge applique—techniques she now shares with students across the UK.
Originally trained as an engineer, Cathy rediscovered her love of sewing while raising her young children and made the leap into running a creative business. Her work is inspired by the simple beauty of garden birds, wildflowers, and rows of quaint terrace houses, all stitched with care using a mix of high-quality linens, cottons, and carefully sourced new and vintage fabrics.
Cathy’s work has been exhibited at major textile shows, featured in national publications, and she is regularly invited to teach and speak about her process and journey. Her pieces reflect not only a distinctive creative style but also a deep-rooted passion for making, teaching, and inspiring others to explore the joy of textile art.
Guests are invited to make their own way to the hotel by car or taxi from their arrival airport or train station. If you’d prefer a more seamless journey, we’re happy to arrange private transfers for an additional fee—just let us know in advance if you’d like to book this service.
