Ann Beck’s Tuscan Embroidery Retreat 12th – 19th May 2026 - Lucca, Italy

Join acclaimed embroidery artist and former theatrical costume designer Ann Beck for a richly creative week in the heart of Tuscany.

Hosted by Creative Experiences, this inspiring retreat offers 4.5 days of expert tuition (27 hours) as Ann guides participants through her exquisite Nightbird design—an advanced-level project combining silk shading, goldwork, couching, and delicate embellishments on a shimmering silk taffeta background.

You’ll stay at the elegant Hotel Villa La Principessa, a converted 13th-century villa nestled just outside Lucca. With its bold fabric-covered walls and warm, attentive service, the hotel provides a restful and atmospheric base for your stitching week.

Beyond the studio, enjoy two specially curated excursions: a full-day trip to San Gimignano, including lunch and time to explore its iconic towers and famous gelato, and a separate afternoon visit to the walled city of Lucca, ending with a group dinner in the magical Piazza dell'Anfiteatro.

About The Host

Ann Beck

My name is Ann Beck. I am an embroidery artist, former theatrical costume designer and textile artist. I spent over 20byears working professionally in fashion and theater.

During my career, I designed costumes for many of the top figure skaters in the world, including Olympic and World Champions Brian Boitano, Kristi Yamaguchi, Dorothy Hamill, Katarina Witt, and Tara Lipinski. I designed and made costumes for ballet companies and television figure skating specials, and worked with Tony Award winning designers and choreographers. From 1993 - 2007, I owned a costume shop in San Francisco which constructed stage costumes for dance companies and performers across the United States and internationally, including over 30 productions for San Francisco Ballet. My costume designs were seen on the Stars on Ice tour, and costumes constructed at my shop were featured on the cover of Dance Magazine.

I retired from costume design 18 years ago. I have continued to work as an artist, designing and creating fine hand embroideries. As a costume designer I was known for my use of intricate appliqué embroideries, brilliant color, and hand painted textiles. I continue to use glorious color in my hand embroidery designs, and create textural interest with multiple techniques including silk shading, goldwork and beading.

I started Ann Beck Embroidery to share my love of hand embroidery. I am passionate about teaching, and had a wonderful time this past year teaching a sold out workshop based on my embroidered artwork Nightbirds, for Creative Experiences in Paris and Provins, France. I developed The Nightbird kit especially for this workshop, and am so excited to be teaching it again in Lucca, Italy in May of 2026!

I hope you will follow my journey as I develop more beautiful kits and workshops. I look forward to sharing my passion for this incredible art form with all of you! —Ann
